Focus on Interests by Setting Goals

Focus on Interests by Setting Goals

As a follow up to my previous blog post, “Why Being Nice to Your Spouse Can be Good for You,” I am sharing with you an explanation about how setting goals allows us to focus on interests rather than positions.

As Joryn explains, “Interest-based negotiation encourages each participant to understand where the other is ‘coming from.’ Position-based negotiation is an adversarial approach that considers only one side, ‘what I want.’ It limits each person to considering only his or her wants and needs, and restricts the negotiation process in the same way that blinders impede a horse’s vision.”  When we focus on interests, we can expand the potential resolutions for the parties.
