Barbara Nicholls is head of the firm’s employment and labour law group.
Barbara advises clients at both the local and national level on trends in employment and labour legislation and jurisprudence. Barbara also has extensive experience in insurance matters and has acted for individuals and insurers, with particular emphasis in the area of professional liability.
Barbara drafts, interprets, and enforces employment contracts and agreements. She advises on termination packages, human rights issues (including accommodation) and privacy law. Barbara is involved in the preparation and presentation of cases before labour tribunals, at arbitration, and before the courts. She has appeared before various appellate courts including the Ontario and Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
Community involvement is very important to Barbara. She has served as treasurer of the Ottawa Chapter of the Women’s Law Association, and as a director of the Opera Lyra Guild. She was a member of the Advisory Committee at Algonquin College, a mentor for new immigrants in OCISO’s professional mentorship program, and a director of the Nepean Kanata Rotary Club.
Barbara’s professional memberships have included the Law Society of Upper Canada, the County of Carleton Law Association, the Canadian Bar Association, the Women’s Law Association, and the Women’s Business Network.
When Barbara was a very young girl, she attended the first Beatles concert in Toronto, Ontario.
