Norman Bowley

John Norman Bowley was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1981, having graduated cum laude 1979 from the University of Ottawa where he took the Blake, Cassells & Graydon Prize in Company Law and the Lieff Prize. He was published in the University of Ottawa Law Review on Tax and Family Law and sat on the executive of the Common Law Students’ Society. He later earned his LL.M. (Technology Law) as well as his TEP designation.

He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Society of Trusts and Estates Professionals, the Estate Planning Council of Ottawa, and the Carleton County Law Association. He was a founding member and sat as chair of the Dispute Resolution Centre for Ottawa-Carleton, a pioneer of community-based mediation in Ontario and is currently a committed member of the President’s Council of the Ottawa Hospital Foundation. He is a past member of the executive of the STEP Ottawa Branch where his proudest moment was initiating the Ottawa Branch’s very own Newsletter, “Capital Accounts”. He has been certified in Collaborative Law, being one of the few in Ontario seeking to bring the civility and dignity of the collaborative process to disputes related to estates and corporate matters.

He has argued in tribunals and courts from the Provincial Court to the Supreme Court of Canada, has taught at the Bar Admission Program and has presented continuing legal education programs in a variety of settings, including the Law Society. He is a frequent writer, speaker and presenter on Estates and Succession, seeking to show the importance of both the technical side and the “soft” side of family and personal issues.

As the years pass for his clients and their parents, Mr. Bowley has naturally focused more and more of his practice on estate and business succession matters, considering the increasingly sophisticated planning needs of his clients and their extended families.

Norman takes his greatest professional satisfaction from tackling complex and thorny family and commercial problems where everyone else has given up. A combination of creativity, experience and dogged perseverance usually brings satisfying results for all parties where others have walked away in frustration.

Mr. Bowley chairs LMR’s Estates and Succession Practice Group as well as sitting on the Technology Committee.

Having been a professional communicator for over forty-five years, Norm is now sharing his writing and speaking skills with others in an after-hours venture called Purposeful Communication. He is especially proud of his series of free weekly e-tips, the Friday Briefing.
