As a follow up to my previous blog post, \u201cWhy Being Nice to Your Spouse Can be Good for You,\u201d I am sharing with you an explanation about how setting goals allows us to focus on interests rather than positions.<\/p>\n

As Joryn explains, \u201cInterest-based negotiation encourages each participant to understand where the other is ‘coming from.’\u00a0Position-based negotiation is an adversarial approach that considers only one side, ‘what I want.’ It limits each person to considering only his or her wants and needs, and restricts the negotiation process in the same way that blinders impede a horse\u2019s vision.\u201d\u00a0 When we focus on interests, we can expand the potential resolutions for the parties.<\/p>\n
